ALL ABOUT THE SAILING SECTION

The sailing section is one of the most active sections in the club and we have a very full and varied programme including regular racing leisure/family sailing, social activities, crew training, safety awareness days and much more.

Racing
Programme
We have an active racing programme throughout the year, racing every Saturday morning at 10 am during the summer and fortnightly on a Saturday at 1pm during the winter months.

There are approximately 40 yachts in our present fleet some of which are fixed keel, but the vast majority are swing keel, better known as trailer sailors.  An average of 12-16 yachts compete in each race.

Usually about 40 people sail on race days and we have 2 fleets, A and B, based on yacht length.  A handicap system is in place for all competing yachts and a racing committee handle all aspects of racing administration.

Long Distance Races
During the course of the year, we have 3 long distance races to the Alkimos Wreck and return, Centaur and return and lastly the overnight race to Fremantle and return.  The Fremantle race is not only very enjoyable but also a great social occasion as well.

Leisure/Family Sailing

Some of our yacht owners prefer to leisure cruise rather than race and during the course of the year a number of days are set aside for this purpose.  In particular, over public holiday weekends.  We consider it important that a number of sailing options are available to all our members.

Catamaran
Sailing

Small cat sailing is available via our bay sailing division which is based at Pinaroo Point and sailing from the beach there.  We have a fleet of cats and there is a full racing programme with very active participation by a number of keen sailors.  See the Catamaran section for more details.

Social
Activities
There are a number of social activities throughout the year including a family sailing day.  After sailing, sausage sizzles, barbecues, Christmas party and the highlight of the year is the sailing dinner and presentation night.

New Crew and Crew Training
New crew are always most welcome and you do not need to have any previous experience.  There are plenty of very capable skippers to help you out.  We strongly encourage all new crew to attend one of our NEW CREW TRAINING INTRODUCTION COURSES which helps you to take those first important steps in learning all about sailing.

If you would like to become involved please contact our crew coordinator ROGER ANGEL.

Safety
Safety on the water at all times is of paramount importance and our safety officer GEOFF JAMES has a very important role in constantly ensuring that all proper safety procedures are adhered to.

At the beginning of each season there is a safety awareness day with man overboard drills and regular updating on the use of lifejackets, flares and all relevant safety issues.
Junior Training
Training for young people is available on Topper dinghies and thanks to the loyal support of our sponsors the cost is very competitive.  For further information contact our Junior Training Coordinator MARTIN RODDIS.
