SAILING SECTION
The sailing section is one of the most active sections in the club, with a full and varied programme including regular racing leisure/family sailing, social activities, crew training, safety awareness days and much more.

RACING PROGRAMME
We have an active racing programme throughout the season with racing every Saturday morning at 10 am during the summer and fortnightly at 1pm on Saturdays during the winter months. There are approximately 40 yachts
in our fleet some of which are fixed keel, but the vast majority are swing keel, better known as trailer sailors.
An average of 12-16 yachts compete in each race.
Usually about 40 people sail on race days and we have 2 fleets, A and B, based on yacht length. A handicap system
is in place for all competing yachts and a racing committee handle all aspects of racing administration. During the
course of the year, we have 3 long distance races to the Alkimos Wreck and return, Centaur and return and lastly
the overnight race to Fremantle and return. The Freo race is not only very enjoyable but also a great social
occasion as well.

CRUISING
As our sailing calendar is full of Saturday and Sunday races, when the holiday season comes round at Christmas and New Year there is a break from the normal rush to the start line and a chance to take friends family and crews for a cruise. Some people say I race as if I was cruising but the chance to relax and unwind is good when there are no pennants involved.
Derek Woodhouse is our Cruising officer and he is keen to encourage anyone who wishes to cruise in the holidays to join him on sails up and down the coast. Sometimes the impromptu sail and meeting up for coffee or beer at Hillarys or Mindarie is very good but to cruise overnight for a few days needs to be a little more planned. Having a destination and time frame is always good. We have a range of options in our area; Fremantle, Mangles Bay, Garden Island, Mandurah, Rottnest Island and further afield to Bunbury or Coral Bay etc.
Time, inclination and wea ther usually have to all be aligned before a good plan can be set in motion and having someone to go with is always good because any experience is always better if it is shared.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
There are a number of social activities throughout the year including a family sailing day. After sailing, sausage sizzles, barbecues, Christmas party and the highlight of the year is the sailing dinner and presentation night.

SAFETY OBLIGATIONS
Safety on the water at all times is of paramount importance and our Safety Officer Mike Eldridge has a very important role in constantly ensuring that all proper safety procedures are adhered to. At the beginning of each season there is a safety awareness day with man overboard drills and regular updating on the use of lifejackets, flares and all relevant safety issues.
When first sailing at the club and whenever there is a change, skippers are required to provide boat/skipper/owners details and sail measurents (form available here) to the Sailing Captain.
Annually by the 1st of October skippers are required to:
- Obtain and fill out the Vessel Safety Declaration form and submit same to the Safety Officer.
- Ensure the vessel's sail number is displayed on the sail in accordance with ORSSC requirements (OS prefix or class number). The ORSSC sail nuumber colour is red. Yachts new to the club may maintain their existing colour until replacement sails are obtained.
- Register and display the vessel registration number in accordance with DoT Regulations.
- Provide boat insurance with racing cover (protected waters).
Note. Skippers who do not comply with the above within the first 3 races of the season will not register a result in subsequent races until their obligations have been met.
