June Boat Comp / Patrons Cup

BOAT FISHING REPORT

June 2017

The June boat fishing competition was held on Saturday 17th June 2017.  This is one of the few competitions in the year where we don’t hold our boat fishing competition on the first Saturday of the month.  The reason this time is that the Angling section has agreed to swap the boat and beach fishing competition dates, so that the beach event can be held on the long weekend at Wagoe.  The Wagoe trip again was a great social and competitive event, which has been previously reported on.

This competition was also combined with the annual Patron’s Cup, a long running event between Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club (MAAC) and the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club.  It was great to once again compete with “our friends down the road”, and I’ll outline the results further down in this report.

To our club event first, the weather for once really turned it on.  Predominantly light winds and no swell to speak of had members going more or less where they wanted to.  We had 32 members sign on in 16 boats, with 26 eventually weighing in.  Fishing was also pretty good for most, with almost all of our key species being caught.  The only notable exception was Tailor, otherwise the remainder of what we come to expect were caught.  Pick of the fish were a 1.065kg King George Whiting caught by Matt Hibben, a lovely 6.740kg Queen Snapper caught by Francis McKeown (pity it wasn’t the Bluewater Classic), a 9.500kg Shark landed by Glen Weymouth, a rare 0.974kg Harlequin caught by Tyla Gillepsie, a 3.370kg Pink Snapper by Rob Walters and a 1.563kg Breaksea Cod caught by Graham Weymouth.  Although not a huge fish by Dhufish standards, a special mention to Daniel Bell, who picked up the biggest at 5.860kg from a 4.4m Dinghy.

Results wise, although I had 9 species weighing around 8kg, Glen Weymouth comprehensively won the Men’s section with 8 species and 18.353kg, also with 4 heaviest.  A bit closer in the Ladies, with Alyce Wettinger’s 5 species and 5.924kg getting the chocolates ahead of Gerry Taylor.  Closer still again in the Veterans, with Eric Leigh and Graham Weymouth both having 4 species, Eric with 3 heaviest and Graham with 4 heaviest.  However, Eric’s 6.102kg versus Graham’s 3.9kg was enough to get a win by a narrow margin.  Again, no Juniors or Mini Juniors for this month which is very disappointing.  Full results are hereabouts.

To the Patron’s Cup, a very close run event.  Results were:

The way it works is that the club with the highest number of competitors weighing in can only count as many bags as the club with the lowest number of bags weighed in.  In this case, MAAC could only count their best 26 bags.  Despite this obvious disadvantage for ORSSC this time, we only lost by 2 points L.  We had the same number of heaviest species, having 9 each, so it came down to the species counts.  Many thanks to everyone you got involved and of course thanks to the MAAC club for the spirit this event is run in.  Perhaps we’ll get over the line next year.

See you all at the next competition.   Tight lines.
