Power Boat Report December 2017

Power Boat Section

Hi everyone

The Power Boat section finally got the good weather and trips are happening.

On 28 October we had a day on Kiewa which is docked at Mindarie. For those who don’t know, Kiewa is a 100 year old restored 40 foot gracious colonial boat that was restored by our own member Ron Lawrence who can trace Kiewa’s lineage back through his ancestry W & S Lawrence Boat Builders.

That morning (and soon the afternoon) we had power boat friends dropping in and out during the day. A tasty selection of finger foods kept the hunger at bay and yarns were spread, mainly by Ron himself. Although the forecast was for big seas, strong winds and rain, only the strong winds prevailed. As it was, all of us drove our cars there, just in case.

A huge thanks go out to Ron and Dora for offering Kiewa for the occasion.

On 25 November the section cruised the river from Maylands up to Guildford for lunch at the historic Woodbridge House. We had 10 members join us in two boats for the slow leisurely cruise at five knots taking about one and a half hours to the restaurant.

The day was terrific weather-wise with a 33 degree forecast and strong winds due at midday. It was a fantastic lunch with views over the river to vineyards beyond. The meal was amazing and we really were looked after by the staff. A huge thanks goes out to Steve Hayward for organising this event as the Trip Leader.

The cruise back didn’t seem as long but the wind sure played havoc trying to get my boat on to the trailer.

Future events include:

  • 8 – 10 December – a two night event on the Mandurah Canals for a night cruise on Friday and a barbeque with Santa on Saturday.
  • 14 December – Power Boat quarterly meeting at 7:30pm.
  • 26 January – should the City of Perth announce it is on, we may hold a boat event to view the fireworks and then stay the night on the river. Watch out for notices.
  • 2 – 4 February – a two night stay at Rockingham at the Alfred Hines Seaside Apartments. This will be a joint event with the Dive Section and other club members.

Don’t forget, if you would like to be included in upcoming events, email orsscpb@gmail.com and get yourself on the email list.

Safe boating and hope to see you on the water.

Peter Hawker

Rear Commodore Power Boat Section.
